So, what accounted for that humbleness and respect and obedience the ancient slaves made it part of their lifestyle or character? Why were ancient slaves obedient to their masters?
From Biblical View Point
Slavery was accepted as a norm in the ancient times. Slavery was adored and agreed upon. In the ancient times, classes of citizens were very active in societies. The creator admonished servants to be obedient to their masters at all times. In Colossians 3:22 we get this order from God
22 Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men; 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. 25 For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality. 4:1 Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven (Colossians 3:22–4:1).
God, who is the Creator of the earth and humans, as Christians believe God ordered slaves obey their masters. There are many chapters of verses in the bible that promote slavery and asked slaves to stay obedient to their masters. We can make reference from 1 Timothy 6:1,2
Let all who are under the yoke as slaves regard their own masters as worthy of all honor so that the name of God and our doctrine may not be spoken against. 2 And let those who have believers as their masters not be disrespectful to them because they are brethren, but let them serve them all the more, because those who partake of the benefit are believers and beloved. Teach and preach these principles.
This is the reason why it was necessary for ancient slaves obedient to their masters from the Biblical viewpoint.
